Sanborn played with Gil Evans big band which is Jazz Jazz. Not smooth. He also played with Roscoe Mitchell and Julius Hemphill who are Avant Garde Jazz.

My honest observation is the sound quality of the late David Sanborn during his latter years getting poorer due to his ailment that affected his performance. RIP

When I was younger, was listening to this genre including David Sanborn. A couple days ago I was thinking about and playing his music genre on my job site and talked about a few of the artists. As I write this 2 days later, for what it’s worth, it also happens to be the day David passed away. Life is mysterious for real.

BAND discussions are always similar and bipolar. It boils down to WE or ME. What works id dependent on the individuals involved. The Eagles are a great example of two MEs in Henley and Frey, who together made the WE. Those two were the heart and soul, and the supporting cast were hired guns.

Hi, Thank you for posting. How sad. I was in a conversation with George Benson (by off chance in SEPT 2002) I'd just arrived in New Jersey for a holiday from the UK. George asked me what our plans were and we told him we'd booked tickets to see him play a concert at The Beacon (Verizon Jazz festival) he billed with Joe Sample and the emerging Cris Botti. I told George that David was my favourite saxophone player and I was fulfilling an ambition to at last hear him for myself. I told him that he had an unmistakable signature that emerged on just about everyone's album. In fact the moment I would hear the sound of his sax I knew I could safely buy the record. The record I bought on the strength of this signature was Carly Simon's haunting album "Spy" David Sanborn features on four tracks of Carly Simon's album "Spy." These tracks are: "Vengeance" "Just Like You Do" "We're So Close" "Memorial Day" On these tracks,he plays the alto saxophone, contributing to the album's distinctive jazz-influenced sound. Mediocrity was not in his vocabulary. My delight was enhanced as George invited me to go backstage on the strength of his say so (how I'll never know) but it happened and I got to meet His wife, his manager and David himself for a brief period and satisfied beyond measure we were treated by our gracious hosts for pudding in Greenwich village. What an evening. Rest in peace David and condolences for his family. From J. In the UK. 🙏 What a sad loss for the world.

Outside of a few co-songwriting contributions, Roger Fisher played some nice licks, but nothing remarkable. Steve Fossen, like Mark Andes solid bassists, though easily replaceable. DeRosier, threw down some Bonhamish fills, but , like the others, nothing extraordinary & easily replaceable. The overwhelming bulk of songs from the first 5 records composed by the Wilson sisters. Their harmonies soared, lifting the songs up. Mid-late 80’s Heart, while successful, saw too many outside songwriters. Heart is, always has been, always WILL be Ann & Nancy Wilson. Put a bunch of other session guys behind them, it’s STILL Heart. No Ann, No Nancy? No Heart!

My younger brother had very eclectic tastes in music. When he graduated from College in 76 he moved into my apartment and there began my musical growth. One night we were smoking some weed and he put on Dave Sanborn's Flight Album. I was immersed in these new sounds. The next day I put on the album again to see if it was "weed" good or really good. It was the latter.

Tommy and James maintain that they had creative differences and that led to the split. So be it. Dennis maintains that they should have compromised their creative convictions for the sake of selling records. It wasn't just Mr. Roboto. Dennis wanted to take the band in a different direction. He even fired their long-time manager over it. So, Dennis was willing to sell out and the rest of the band was not. Simple as that. It's tragic because they made a lot of great music together, but isn't that the case with a lot of those bands in the 70's and 80's who split up. Egos get in the way. Seems to me the rest of the band is handling this with more class than Dennis. They wish him well. He is still bitter.

I loved the bands music growing up in my teens during the 70's. I worked with Denny for 2 years in the late 90's on a CBC TV series called The Pit Pony by this time he carved out a pretty good acting career for himself also. Very humble kindhearted man with a great sense of humour great storyteller. A Canadian boy from N.S. born and raised. He was an open book and a gentlemen was a pleasure to work with.

GUYS! You didn't highlight that the sound of the Saturday Night Live band to this day is rooted in Sanborn's playing in the original years of the band. Think of Chevy Chase or Gilda Radner and Sanborn's playing is ringing in your ear. I love Tower of Power's Lenny on Sax with SNL for 30+ years but he is just carrying on the tradition set by Sanborn [who also later played regularly with Dave Letterman's band.]
